That’s one reason why I prefer it over the Zero or Diet lines. The only other thing that really tells them apart is just the smallest hint of aspartame aftertaste from the Energy version. I find artificial watermelon can get overpowering and over-sweet really fast and I think these have a nice balance going on. They’re both less of a hit than just grabbing a Jolly Rancher, as I mentioned, and I kinda like that. I would say that the original is just a small bit more “powerful” in its flavor while the Energy is just slightly more “subtle.” But those are only in comparison to one-another. They do an amazing job of matching flavors, even with the difference in sweeteners and whatever mild flavor comes in with the grape juice. Trying the two side-by-side, I gotta once again hand it to the flavor-makers over at Mountain Dew. Since Energy is made with grape juice and aspartame, I could’ve maybe done this with a Major Melon Zero instead, but… eh. As such, I picked up a bottle so I could give these two a side-by-side taste test. I mentioned above that it’s probably been about 2 years or so since I’ve had a regular Major Melon. I mean, it’s still a Dew, so it’s very sweet in nature, but it more eases you into the watermelon as opposed to dropping a watermelon bomb on your tongue. But, unlike actually popping one of those candies in your mouth, this one is much more subtle in its approach. And by watermelon, I do mean fake watermelon like a Jolly Rancher as opposed to actually slicing open a watermelon and taking a whiff.Īs for the flavor… yeah, watermelon Jolly Rancher is pretty spot-on. And the smell is a little bit watermelon, but not overpoweringly so. Before I can taste how Energy stands up to the original, I need to get it out of the can. I have to admit, while I remember finding the flavor just fine, I do think it’s been about 2021 since I last had one. There’s not a whole ton of watermelon sodas out there, so it was interesting to see it show up and now last these couple of years. It’s, as the name suggests, a watermelon soda. It’s not a limited edition, and has been on the shelves since at least January of 2021 (that’s when I did my review of it, anyway). Major Melon is Mountain Dew’s latest regular flavor. So, now that it’s cold, let’s give it a try. I just got my case delivered to me yesterday. This time around, it’s Mountain Dew’s newest “evergreen” flavor, Major Melon. Like, they recently did Pitch Black and Code Red, while they had Baja Blast last summer. Lately, they’ve been creating flavors based on regular Mountain Dew flavors. I like the fact that it’s lower in sugar, but not entirely sweetened by aspartame (the base is white grape juice, so there is a little bit of “actual” sugar in there). This subset of Mountain Dew has quickly become my most-consumed version. Specifically, it’s time for another Mountain Dew Energy review.
